the early 83 had no rubber inserts in the head gaskets ..then they added the grommets for the top passage and the oil hole.... then that was changed and the "O" ring was left out.

in the newer gaskets this is what you see.....

The Top gasket is 7.3 the lower is the 6.9.

This was the original 83 gasket......

on the newer style for a while they did have inserts for the lower passages.

But, Hey Plug the heads.....

Thanks guys. I was looking at the 6.9 kit--Summiit racing. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/f...91pt/make/ford. Comes with the stem seals. Are they the same for 6.9 and 7.3? And as far as the plugs for the heads, they available anywhere? Just got on and didn't have a chance to look around.

As far as a leak down tester, anyone have a good review on one that won't break the bank? I guess it would have to be diesel specific? Or do I just get an adapter for a gasser one.

the Harbor Fright units have the same quick connector that is used on the diesel Compression tester.

they are not engine specific...well with the exception of on Aircraft engines https://www.kitplanes.com/build-your...k-down-tester/

I don't mind suggesting the HF units as the general home mechanic doesn't use em on a daily basis so no need to spend a fortune on 1.

IF you don't have an adapter then you can make an adapter from a bad glow plug without much trouble.

As far as the Plug in the head goes most local auto parts houses should have them although parts houses are not like they used to be so YMMV NAPA would be a good bet,

Just know that kit comes with the short style oil shields, and international revised them to use long style oil shields. No idea if it's really important, was for oil usage, or simply emissions.

I'm going to pick up the 7.3 set. Stupid question---the head bolts don't pass through the block ,do they? Just curious because I got the broken stud out with the needle nose pliers, and left the hole open Was going to run it quick to make sure the batteries were fully charged before the leak down test and tear down.

And I went to NAPA to see about the head plugs. They can get the threaded ones, but that one doesn't look threaded. Is there a specific name for those? Thanks
