Alternator issue...

2001 f250 5.4 triton

So this alternator is new, however I did not install it and when I got it the wiring looked shoddy to me...
I would really love someone else’s expertise because electric is one thing I really don’t understand beyond basics...
anyway I took pictures to show and I hope I can up load them...but the alternator has a harness plugged in with three wires coming out red, green, and yellowish brown I believe...the yellowish brown is connected to a smaller harness that plugs back into
The top of the alternator...there is a larger gauge wire that’s yellow coming off and it has been wrapped with the green wire and wired over to the starter solenoid, where the positive battery cable connects...then the red wire was plugged into an unused solenoid over by the fuse box..

I was driving one day and the battery light came on so I checked and the red wire had come undone...however the engine runs smoother without it connected, but the light is on and it won’t allow the lower power source/cig lighter to accept a power inverter, the inverter just turns off...

when I plug the red wire into the positive battery terminal, the light goes off but the engine acts like it’s under load and runs a little rough...same if I plug the wire into the unused solenoid...

where is the proper location for this wire and is something not wired correctly because when the battery light goes off the engine runs smoother???

it’s all very strange to me...

Photo of the harnesses and wires...

Photo of the large gauge wire plugged into the starter solenoid by the battery...it ties in with the positive cable from battery...

And here is the red wire that plugs into the solenoid which turns the battery light off, but as soon as it’s unplugged the engine runs smoother...

That just isn't right. Someone cobbed it up...
Look inside the cable see if the wire is in there..just above the connector..

Oh...I mean I assume they are together because that wire is the one that affects everything..if I unplug the wire the engine runs smooth but the light comes on..if the wires weren’t connected, then nothing would happen when I plug it in or unplug it...right?

Pull that black plastic back find the original wire. It should be in there. I could look at my truck but it's snowing outside.

Ok gotcha...I just assumed that green wire went in the black casing with the larger wire all the way to the positive terminal...I didn’t see it come out anywhere when I traced it...and then for some reason the red wire has a connecter and is sent elsewhere...

That’s probably why it was shoved into the solenoid harness...I just thought it was weird that the engine seems to run better without it being plugged in,
but without being plugged in I’m afraid my battery is not charging..at least the light comes on...and it’s not because the battery has low voltage

that picture of the wires doesn’t show it but the red and white wire coming out of the alternator is a couple inches long before it gets to the connector...the red wire is certainly coupled with red and white wire from the alternator...

That wire needs to go to the correct place. And yes it has to be on a 12v source. If the battery is low when that wire is connected the alt might drag down the engine slightly. And yes unplugged won't charge.

After some research I think it’s correct...the larger gauges wire is obviously my lead 12v positive and that goes to the starter solenoid, some people put it right on the positive terminal...the green wire with it must be the lamp wire which should have a resistor built in and also go with the positive lead...then this red wire is the exciter which actually starts the alternator charging and it goes to either the fuse box or the battery...I am assuming they chose the 12v part of the solenoid because it was fused by the main box... I just thought it was weird that the engine would slow so much under just the alternator load...thank you for your help and enjoy your thanksgiving...unfortunately nothing is open otherwise I’d go get some hardware and install my new wheels..I guess I’ll have to wait
