Are the dimensions for the top of the bed the same? Curious if I can take the truck cap off my 2012 and use it on a 2021. I know the back molding piece on the bottom of window over tailgate would need to be replaced. Has anyone done this for a pre 2016 to newer model truck?

I TOO HAVE A 2012 250 THAT I AM WANTING TO TRADE FOR A 2021 350. MINE HAS THE STEP TAILGATE AND I AM CURIOUS IF IT WOULD FIT AS IS? SCRAPRAT, HAVE YOU FOUND OUT ANYTHING ON THE DIMENSIONS?
No, nothing yet. I'm out boondocking away from civilization but should be closer to civilization next week and need to make a run into town. I'm going to measure my 2016 which is the same as the 2012 and swing by a Ford dealership and measure one if there's a longbed on the lot. The tailgate won't matter because the new tailgates appear to have a larger top edge so a new bottom molding piece on the cap opening would need to be replaced if that is the case. They're easy to change out with just the screws holding it on. I'll post back if no one answers that has done this already.
I sold my 2009 CCSWB and bought a 2017 CCSWB, almost identical in appearance (even the same color), truck. My cap from the 2009 would not fit in every dimension. Not only is the length and width off, but the 2017 bedrails are higher and the cap would have stuck up over the truck roof. Short answer, I had to buy a new cap.

Now that you say that about bedrail height I do think a new cap might be in order.
