A little fuel system help

I’ve got a ‘13 550 that decided to die on me. Last week I had a low fuel pressure warning. Decided it was time to change filters. Before I had a chance to, the little oil can light came on, the truck lost all power, and eventually coughed and died. I put new filters in it and followed the priming procedure. No such luck on a restart. I can hear the frame mounted pump running. But when I crack open the drain on the bottom of the cap, I get nothing dripping out. I’m an idiot and would typically just throw a new pump on and give it a shot. But, between the 500 dollar price tag, and the additional in-tank sending unit, I was hoping to get a little more testing in. Is there any way to test the sending unit and frame mounted pump independently?

I’ve tried priming waaaayyyy too many times. And I’m not getting any fuel to drain from the petcock. That would indicate I’m not pumping any fuel, correct?

Lots of threads about crap in the tank, mostly the cap for the def bottle, dropping the tank isn't all that bad, did it myself with half a tank, it was super clean, my issue was a poor connection to the passenger side battery, found this out over a grand into it.

I guess the “over a grand in to it” is what I’m trying to avoid haha. Any way to test these pumps?

If it were me, I'd get a scan tool and see what kind of lowside fuel pressure you are actually getting. Then report back and go from there.

Are you familiar with the fuel filters on the 2011-2016 6.7 PSD?
Meaning.......are you SURE the lower (frame mounted) filter housing is screwed ALL THE WAY on to the stop?
If it is not, it will not prime.
Good luck.

I’ve only recently become familiar with them. But it’s definitely hitting the stop.

I’ve got FORScan on my phone. Do you know if it will monitor pressure? I can’t seem to find it.

Yes, Forscan LITE for your phone will monitor pretty much all PIDs available on the truck.

The low side fuel pressure PID in Forscan is named FLP, description is Low Side Fuel Pressure.

well, I’m definitely not a FORScan expert. But I can’t find the FLP to save my life. Found plenty of other fuel related pids, but not that one specifically (or any others that related to low side fuel pressure).

as it sits, when I’m monitoring all the fuel related pids and the truck is cranking, I get zero movement out of any of the gauges.

actually, now that I’m looking at it, the RPM pid doesn’t move while the truck is cranking. Apparently I need to learn how to use FORScan.

When I pull the yellow plug from the separator, I should be leaking fuel, correct?

pull the filters and check for proper o rings and then re-install. I take it you are using the motorcraft filters?

genuine motorcraft filters, dorman cap. All the o rings are in place. Fresh coating of oil on them and tightened until I felt the stop.

why not a motorcraft cap? My guess it is sucking air.

Didn’t have a motorcraft available and I was hoping to get my dead truck off the side of the road.

let’s say the dorman cap is crap. It’s letting air by. Would that explain the lack of fuel in the cap? Is the dcfm the only thing pulling fuel past that filter?

yes the DCFM has the pump too. I would suspect that is an issue, but you could pull and try again.

Other thoughts that have been mentioned is a blockage in the pick up from the tank or no fuel at all.

Have you checked for proper installation of the top fuel filter.
