Flat Snap Ring Auto Hub Help!

Can someone please tell me how to get the snap ring off to pull the auto hub out. i am replacing with manual hubs. I have the snap ring tools but they will not fit in the little crack to expand the ring to get it out. what is the trick to this. i tried all the autoparts stores and know one has one that will fit in there. i also stopped by money hungry dealer and asked them and they said it takes a special tool but that they did not have any for sale. if i can get that ******* out i can replace the manual hubs.

We changed my hubs over to manual a couple of months ago. We used to mechanics probes or picks as someone called then. One to hold it from roating and one to get under it and pry it out, takes a little fiddeling to get it right but it works. The rings that come with the hubs are much easier to get out. Good luck!

I used two jewelers flat blade screw drivers. One to pry up the end, the other to get behind it and push the end out. Once you start one end, just grab it with your hand and pull it out. It is not a strong spring and has alot of flex to it. Easy to remove once you start one end.

I i had the same problem as you and the two picks did the trick . you did remove the clip that just slides in didnt you? it is a pain but it is very doable once you get the knack. good luck

i've read somewhere that there's a pin hole on the hub assembly so that you could stick a pin and lift the snap ring i haven't noticed it on mine. i use two dental type picks one to lift and the other to pull away from hub

Yeah I got em out. I agree with once you get the first one its easy. I ended up using, or sneaking out of the kitchen, an ice pick. Perfect for flicking that flat snap ring. Once that was done it took about 10 mins to have the whole thing switched out a new one in. This site is like a big Bronco brain.
