Better off just replacing that glow plug relay amyway. Most of us use that big ******* Stancore or Western Plow unit. Fresh GPs too if unknown age and brand. ZD11 Ford only.
Hard starts can be from weak or undersize batteries along with a beat starter. Been there and done that. Clean the battery terminals too, corrosion on lead cannot be seen. Good thread on here for that.
Mechanical fuel sucks. E-fuel it and never look back.
Basically baselining the truck is what you need to focus upon too.
The truck never has a hard start. It will either fire right up or it wont. Nothing in between. It never cranks and cranks and then starts. I replaced the glow plugs with ford ones and even crossing the relay with a screw driver dosnt help. Batteries tested good and the starter is new from the previous owner and the truck cranks fast. Battery terminals are clean and tight. I would love to e fuel the truck but I'm not ready to pour that kind of money into a truck that I've owned for 2 months and only drove about 50 km lol.
More data! Try cleaning the square connector under the hood by brake master cyl. Use Deoxit, best stuff around. Same with PCM and IDM connector.
Worth disconnecting that Edge tuner.
Have you rebuilt the IPR? It has a few orings. Also that harness gets chewed up with Diesel fuel. Check my thread, I junked entire fuel filter bowl harness and used a direct shot to the IPR with fresh pigtail and Weatherpack connector. No IPR = No start. I bet if unplugged while running truck would die too as it modulates HPOP.

Thanks I will try cleaning the connections tomorrow. I have read on the forums that to get all the edge stuff off your computer the computer needs to be reflashed. The screen on the tuner is burnt out or something but I think the tuner itself actually still works. So I cannot set it back to stock tune with my tuner. I have not rebuilt the IPR. I'll have a look at your threads.
Fuel pressure does not hold when the truck is off. What should the pressure be when cranking? I thought I read 15-20 psi somewhere. I never tested the pressure while running yet.
You should be seeing 40ish psi while cranking. Check the condition of the spring and plunger in the for (brass plug on the front driver's side of the fuel bowl)
Also is it still correct that you always have smoke while cranking?
There is a really good flow chart around for no start on these motors if I have time later I'll post it.

Thanks. I will check that tomorrow. I have always had white smoke when the truck had the no start condition except for only one time. That one time I didn't have smoke was when I was driving the truck for about 45 minutes and it was working great. I shut it off for about 5 minutes, went back to start it and nothing. No smoke was just cranking and cranking.
Sorry for lack of posting but it's been pouring rain here so never got a chance to work on the truck Until yesterday. But I think I finally got to the bottom of this problem. It turns out it was a mix of cps and glow plug relay. The plastic on the gpr post had fallen apart making the post lose. It still looked fine and would test ok because when I put the lead of the multi meter on it would push the post down and create a connection. I found this out after checking for lose connection's by pulling on different wires and the post just pulled right out of the relay. Truck is running good now and starting all the time. Now I just got to figure out why I'm getting a flashing over drive light over 70 kph (40mph)...
