Anybody else do it?I have long been in the habit of turning off all acc. on my rigs before I turn off the engine-a/c,heater,heated wheel, etc.I have tried pointlessly forever to get the wife on board as well, but we all know to pick our battles. My theory is less strain on the starter/electronics/whatever at startup, but this may also be nothing.I've done it so long,I don't remember when/how it started.Just curious if anyone else does this, and why?
Everything is computer controlled now and the computer will not allow accessories to effect the system during startup. The vehicle goes through a boot sequence after the engine is started and alternator voltage has been confirmed by the intelligent power management system. There is no need to worry about powering things off in a modern vehicle.
Every single button runs to the computer before an action occurs.
I've always been in the habit of it, but not due to "strain on startup"....but because I don't want to start my vehicle and be blasted with loud music, HVAC blasting me, lights coming on, wipers going, etc, etc...
Now that I have been car shopping...nothing sucks more than starting a car on the lot and the thing going crazy on max AC, radio on, etc...
Someone that understands me! lol I have been doing this on all vehicles for years. I don't know why I started that, but my batteries do last a long time... Got my wife to do it and was even shocked when I rode with my sister and she turned everything off. Said she remembers me doing it when I would take her to and from school.
During a normal truck shutdown my accessory GPS goes into a sleep mode instead of off. Sleep is intended to provide a faster startup but costs a little power from the GPS's internal battery while sleeping. With very little driving in the age of COVID the GPS's battery has gone flat a couple of times. There are two downsides. 1) The GPS doesn't have enough power for it's own normal shutdown so it can't send my phone the lat/long of the parked truck. 2) The batteries lifetime will be diminished and perhaps that will determine the GPS's lifetime. It is easy to do a complete GPS shutdown and I usually remember.
I do this too. I let my lift pump run until at least the the beeping stops. So I don't want any thing else drawing power during this cycle. It may be based on old thinking but an engine is an engine so I still do old rituals as long as they don't cause harm.
I let the lift pump run because I want verified suction pressure at the high pressure pump when it turns over even though I know the system is already primed.

Interesting stuff.Good to know.

It's a lot like prefilling an oil filter at oil changes. Can I go without doing it because the truck is designed to handle not prefilling? Most likely yes. But it doesnt hurt and it may even help.
