Code

I was having some poor running issues with my 1973 Ford 351 Q code that I thought was ignition. When I removed the plugs from cylinders 2 and 6 I found that the plugs were damaged in a way that I have not had happen before. I have taken pictures of them and was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what happened? I replaced the plugs with new plugs cleaned the others and it returned to running just like before. Thanks for any ideas on this..I have had a few stumbles with backfire in the manifold which I think maybe lean carb mixture am waiting on the calibration kit to try to enrich the mixture on the Edelbrock #1406 carb. Les

This was from cylinder #6

Preigniton and detonation, two things the C and M are famous for.

I wonder what the tops of your pistons look like?

Better gas. richer mixture less ignition advance, and colder plugs are part of the fix, followed by different heads and pistons.

I will try the richer mixture as soon as the calibration kit arrives but in the mean time reducing the ignition advance would be a good try. I just passed the emission test here in Arizona with quite lean numbers which I had to adjust the timing to pass. Any other recommendations to try? I don't have a scope to be able to inspect the piston tops but looking in thru the spark plug holes the tops look very dirty. Les

Looks like mechanical damage to me. i.e. smacking the piston or something.Maybe something got in the combustion chambers?
