Steering column

While I have my dash and various other parts disassembled right now, I'm wondering what parts/things I can do to rebuild/improve my steering column. 78 F250 4x4 Supercab 4 speed. I already plan to replace the steering box with a Blue Top steering box, but I'm sure there are parts in the column itself that could use some attention as well. Thanks.

Get rid of the rag joint under the hood with a borgeson steering shaft.

Evan 4WD F250 does not have a rag joint, only 2wd's and F150 4WD.

I'd replace the turning signal switch and the bearing that goes in the end sticking out the firewall.

One of the good upgrades I did to my truck column was to replace the plastic bushing at the box end of the column with a nice bearing. It was inexpensive, on ebay, and easy to install. Below.

Got it. Ordered. $39.00 free shipping, no tax. Thanks! Removed steering shaft and painted the shaft. Old plastic bearing didn't feel like it was doing anything. Looking forward to having the actual steel bearing on there. Any thoughts as to the tar paper/jute padding that attaches to the firewall? Should I bother with trying to piece mine which is falling apart back together? I'm going to be putting sound deadener on the firewall.

You should be able to get them at LMC truck, Dennis Carpenter, or NPD (national parts depot) although I find their catalog confusing. Or even on ebay.

I just cleaned the old one and lubed it. But, the black plastic ring which goes around it broke. Does it really need it?

The black plastic part fits pretty tightly inside the area in the column. It might be OK for a while, but I would get a new bearing.
