yeah, I know what you mean. 3.50s or 3.55s would be good then. My 85 has 3.08s with 235/75r15s and it does pretty good.
I was going to buy I new truck, but didn't like the $400 a month..
Actually my 84 runs real nice with the 31s and 3.08s. I still have plenty of power to jump out and pass people on the highway, and no trouble on the on ramps. Even driving off road, I can still spin the tires plenty fast in the mud to keep the tread clean. I haven't had any trouble climbing hills or in deep sugar sand. The problem comes up when I am towing heavy loads and have a long grade to climb. I find myself having to downshift and the engine still strains a bit on steeper grades. And not only that I am concidering installing a 2 inch lift with 32s later on so I will need a little more gear to git er done. On to the new truck thing... you Inline Six Guys will love this one. Last time I was home on leave in May, a couple buddies and myself went up to play in the Silver Lake sand dunes. I was getting ready to take a run at Test Hill, when I noticed two trucks sitting on top of the dune. So I pulled my ole 84 Ford 4x4 up next to them to discover both of them were sitting on their frames stuck. One of the trucks was a 2001 Chevy 2500 HD with the 8.1 Vortec big block, the other was a 94 Chevy Z71 with the 5.7 Vortec 350. I rolled up next to them and asked if they needed a hand. "Sure!" one of them yelled out. I revved my engine so they could hear it a little better. One of them yelled back "Hey what do you got in that thing?" When I told them, they were completely sure that my little 6 cylinder would not have enough power to pull them out. I first pulled up behind the HD and we hooked up the towstraps. I dropped er into low range and put it in reverse and yanked him off there like it was nothing. He didn't even take his tranny out of park! The Z71...same thing! It felt pretty good to pull out two pretty much brand new Chevy trucks that were stuck, with a 19 year old Ford 4x4 pickup that has almost 200k on it! I have to laugh a little everytime I see an ad for the New Silverado HD on TV or in a magazine. One of the guys said "Damn, I'll never bad mouth a Ford 300 six ever again!" Yep feels good doesn't it!
