Someone's removed you OEM Flux Capacitor maybe? 
Looks to be maybe an engine hoisting plate? I've never seen one of those on anything to be honest though---quite a mystery here too.

It's a shield / crash bracket. It protects the fuel rail from being dislodged (and possibly allowing fuel to pour onto hot engine components) by the coolant reservoir on impact.
