SURGING
Good Morning Y'all,
I got my 2020 F250 STX 7.3L CCSB 4x4 3.55 about 5 weeks ago. It has a little over 3900 miles on it. When I started my truck yesterday, to go home after work, the Truck Surged right after the engine fired up. It was like someone was Pushing the Truck, from the Front or the Rear. Kind of like when someone bumps your vehicle with their vehicle. Similar to putting a vehicle in reverse, while the Parking Brake is on. This was a Different Motion than when you rev up the engine in park, which causes more of a "rocking" or side to side motion. I've Never had this happen to Any Vehicle I've ever driven.
I'm also hearing a "Klunk" every now and then when I go from Park into Drive. More noticeably, when I go into Reverse.
Could the Surge be coming from the Transmission? It has a Build Date of 07/20.
Suggestions?
Thank You!
Scott

I've found that mine has a very very high idle on initial start when cold. If I put it into gear right away, I get a pretty big lurch forward (or backward if putting into Reverse). I now typically wait 30 seconds before putting it in gear.
Does this happen for you only on cold starts, or all starts?

OffBalance, this happened on a Cold Start yesterday. It'd sat from 6 am to 5 pm. I've also noticed the High Idle whenever I start the engine, from when it's been sitting for at least several hours. I also will wait 30 sec - 1 min before I put it in gear. I wasn't ready when this happened the first time! It caught me completely by surprise. Felt like a race horse ready to charge out of the gate!
Thevol I've never had any Torque Converter Issues before, so I am Unfamiliar with what conditions could occur. Is that what this sounds like?

My 7.3L had a build date of 6/20. I had the same "surging" at 588 miles when sitting at red lights. It happened for about 1 day. Took it to the dealer and as soon as I pulled in, the check engine light came on and next thing I new, I had a new motor. Lifters failed in 6 & 7. No cause given, just replaced.
Potentially, mine had a leak and several have had a grinding noise while in gear. Definitely had a bad batch of torque converters recently. In my case they replaced the whole trans as the torque converter was on backorder.
Did any of you that had this surging issue get it fixed by Ford? I took my new 2021 F350 7.3/4.30 in for this exact issue and Ford is saying it’s “normal”. Based on the severity of the surging (and the feeling like the truck is trying to walk away from me at times causing me to apply excessive brake pressure), I do not believe this is anywhere near normal.

I don't this this is what the OP posted about. The truck wanting to move with the break applied is caused by the high idle when engine is cold. Idle will return to normal once engine warms up after 5 min of driving. It is odd that ford programmed the engine to have such a high idle in gear. But it's intentional, so "Normal".
to clarify, my main concern with my truck IS what the OP posted about - severe surging or lunging when initially placing the truck into D or R in the morning or after sitting for long periods of time. The second issue of having to mash the brakes for a bit while the truck warms may be related or not, but curious if anyone with this clunk/lunge/surge issue has had any luck getting it resolved. Thanks for the thoughts.
The way I interpreted the OP post is that the truck surged when he started the engine, not putting it in drive or reverse yet.
My truck lunges when I put it in drive or reverse and not holding the brakes very hard during the high idle. The rear brakes also make a clunk or groan as they try and hold back the truck.

Apologies - I believe my issues is more like post #2 by Offbalance above. Essentially, my truck, when I start up and select D to leave my driveway, lunges forward aggressively. Just curious if anyone that has had a similar issue has had any luck getting Ford to look into the problem. I was basically brushed off when I took it in and told that my truck “operates normally”. I then took the service technician to his new truck lot and had him sit with me in two different trucks to see if they produced the same effect, and neither did (just as the truck i test drive before ordering mine did). They went into gear normally like any other truck I’ve owned. The technician said he agreed it was different, but said his hands were tied because Ford told him it was “normal”. So I am quite sure my truck has a problem, but unsure how to go about getting Ford to address.

Ah okay. Yes my truck does the same. It's unusual in my opinion to design it to have such high idle in gear, but seems to also be designed that way for a reason. Many people on the forum have noticed the same thing. I'm now surprised that there are trucks that don't do it. So I don't know what to think.
