I have a 1990 F250 that is real hard to start. When it does it runs real rough for about 20 seconds and then smoothes right out. I thought it might be a timing problem because it just cranks and cranks, smells real rich too. Real wierd because like I said clears up just like someone through a switch. Does it hot and cold although it is worse in the morning. Truck has 351W and C-6 combo . truck has a MSD 6AL And makes no difference! Thanks for the help
A couple things to try.
Good spark at cranking speed at plugs?
Leaky fuel injector loading manifold with fuel after shutdown, runs way too rich till it gets cleared out? Could use a fuel pressure tester, and check to see if pressure holds after shutdown.
f250j, How old are the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. I have had similar probs with my 92' f-250, 351. I started really looking deep into the situation and wound up overlooking the obvious. It needed wires and a cap. I had replaced the plugs but never really thought about the rest. Cap was burnt and one wire had a hole blown through it. Thing still ran good when warm, but the mornings were tough. Just a thought. Good luck.
Cap, rotor and plugs less than 3500 miles. Have to try the fuel pressure thing. all else is normal. Does the computer avd. the timing at start up?
Thanks
