1982 ford courier
Your Courier was built by Mazda, in Japan. It was part of a deal Ford struck with them, about exchanging ideas, engines, drive lines and even models. Ford returned the favor by building the Mazda version of the Explorer here, for their dealers. At one time, Ford actually owned about 45% of Mazda. But that changed in the mid 2000s.
If by 3.8, you mean the Ford Essex 3.8, I think you would be much better off finding a Mustang 5.0 and transmission to put in your truck. There is nothing wrong with the Essex engine, I just don't think the Canadian built engine is going to work well with your Japanese build drive line. In any case, adding much more horse power and torque, to your truck, is going to require you replace the rear end too. All that said, if you click on the "Small Cassis Trucks tab in the Forums you will see a section for the Ranger and B series trucks. Ask your question there. You may find someone has already done the home work for you.
Don't forget to check out you state chapter too.
. . . and thinking of this question: Change out the 2.3 for a 200HP V6 or a 140-460HP V8 (depending on what 5.0 you're talking about). If it's all the same to you, and if you have the ability to go with a 5.0, and all of the fab work that will go along with it, that would be the best choice.
