I bought a kit from trans parts warehouse or something and parts from a transmission shop nearby. The shim in the pocket and keep an eye out for a shim kit. When replacing the bearings assemble the transmission measure end play by lifting the shaft and add the appropriate shim to pre load the bearing. Detailed write up on oil burners.

Boy, that is some nasty looking sludge in that last pic. Darrin. I purchased a bearing kit off Ebay when I Replaced the front case on the S47 when it broke in the 97. If I'm not mistaken, it was from Midwest. I might be mistaken though as I'm starting to suffer from CRS. (can't remember S***) LOL It wasn't a to bad of a job to rebearing it. The hardest part was getting the pocket bearing race out, as you can't get behind the race to drive it out. I wound up getting an internal type posi-lock gear puller for my slide hammer.

I found and downloaded the ZF service manual and will be following that closely. I'm sure there will be a few new tools I need. For those that have done this, what tool did you use to remove the plugs holding the detent ***** and springs?

I would at least pop syncros on 4th and 3rd as they are right up front. 1st usually has little to no wear BUT you are so deep into it really a no brainer to just do all six. Reverse is the only one that uses brass from memory. Rest are steel or iron.

Let me try to recall about the *****. Are you speaking of those plugs on top of case?

My stuff all came from Midwest.

If I remember right, I drilled a small hole in the plug and used a sheet metal screw in the hole and a pry bar under the sheet metal screw head.

Well, parts are orders from midwest trans. Should be here in time for a weekend project.

Any idea where these parts go? I've replaced everything I removed and have no clue what these are for? Parts for a different version trans? It's 2 oil seals, a large o-ring, and 4 small freeze plugs.

Also, the service manual talks about a seal on the release bearing guide tube. I don't see where mine ever had one or that one of the above would fit.

All I found on mine is this little metal ring, likely part of the old release bearing that gendered on me a few years ago.

The freeze plugs look like they could be the covers for the shift detent *****.

Following along Darrin. I wish I had some input. It looks like you have it handled though.

No, they're too small. I already used three 3 larger plugs to put the dents back in.

Zf5 have different size freeze plugs. Rebuild kits started including both sets for the shift detents.

As for the seals I am not sure. Proabably a 2wd vs 4wd thing

I can see a 2wd definitely having a different seal on the output to fit over the yoke vs. just sealing on the shaft. But the input shaft seal would be the same. I'm not really worried about the freeze plugs and seals. More just curious about the large o-ring and the service manual talking about a seal on the release bearing guide tube, specific to the 7.3 housings.

I had some odds and ends left over. S5-42 vs S5-47 had a few differences in the case too I recall, at least the internal shift works for sure along with the obvious ratios. Did you do syncros?

Probably 30k since I did mine, nothing blew up!

No syncros this time. I already ordered the bearing only kit and am in need of getting this back on the road. Everything I could see was in excellent condition.

Gotcha. Keep us posted how it works.

They are very simple, just massive, units.
