We have a 95 Ranger 4X4 that purchased wrecked. Very nice truck. We have one on going problem. Some times the gas gauge will work sometimes it won't. When it doesn't work, it is VERY hard to put gas in you have to actually hold the nozzel at the very slowest not even enough to not hold it on. Any faster and the automatic shut off kicks on. Body shop said they replaced the sending unit........ Another mechanic thought it was just the Vent tube. Took it out and it worked for a little while. Now it hasn't worked for 3 or so months. I don't want to put a new sending unit in because of the expense. What next?
I would check the ground connection of the sending unit to make sure it was well connected(and not trying to ground through the tank straps).
My f150 had the fuel filling problem, and it turned out to be a little plastic pipe inside the filler pipe, had come loose from the bracket that holds it. I guess the little pipe was in the way, and making fuel splash back up the neck, making the sensor in the fuel nozzle shut off. Take the fuel filler pipe off the tank and the body, and you will see it inside.
