Will other trucks front drive shaft fit my 78 F-150 4x4?? my dad has a 78 F-250 but his front drive shaft is 6" to long. he has a Np205 (chain driven one right??).. And i have teh np203 (gear driven) Will a stock drive shaft fit with a 4" lift? I just cant find a front affordable front drive shaft for the dang thing...
i myself am having that problem my suggestion would be to measure it and compare when you go out to a junkyard. Make sure you leave room for it to telescope and rotate
Yea, I was wandering if i had the T-case's backward. I had it measured to see if any thing i could find would fit. Anybody know if the 4" lift will make the drive shaft hit the cross member??
I think you could get away with the stock shaft and a 4" lift, and I don't think the shaft will hit the cross member. I have the same truck with a 3" lift and use the stock one with no problems. However, it was recomended to me by a shaft shop that 4" and up should get a lengthened shaft. The bigger concern would be the shaft coming apart from extending too far.
Jack the truck up by the frame and check clearence at the cross member. Also check shaft extension.
I went to a boneyard last weekend and tried to find a rear shaft. Unfortunately, the rear shaft is what the fork lift hits when they pick 'em up, so they were all bent.
I swapped the shaft off my 79 onto the 78 and found that the double cardan joint was different. The bolt pattern where it bolts to the t-case yoke was wrong (and they're the same t-case). Ya might want to grab the yoke from the t-case, or at least bring the old shaft along to make sure it fits.
I bought the freakin thing guy said it was 29" Then it wont even fit.. i measure it and it is 29" but theres a 3" of extra for the dual u joints!!!! How hard is it to cut a weld a drive shaft? I got 2 of them taht are to long now....
But how much will that cost? Would it just be easyeir to find the right shaft? And it is 3" to long so i say about 5" shoudl be cut out to let it slide in and out a few inches? But the Yokes hit my tranny pan.. it is messed up some..
Originally posted by Torque1st Cost will depend upon the shop. Otherwise go to the junkyard with a tape measure.
Thats what im thinking.. But i might get it shortend.. I only gave $36 shiped for it.. I was thinking of going up to that Rascal Flats place up in Northern Missouri and check around for one..
