Power loss over time

Hi Guys.
Ive had my super crew cab 2007 5.4 4x4 for a few years now. It had about 100k on it when i got it. Maybe i bought it with rose tinted glasses on.

Since ive owned it. Ive replaced lots of bits and pieces suspension spark plugs and brakes mainly.

I have had some reasonable powered vehicles before. Mainly hotrods with v8s. Smaller trucks and alike. Now this truck seems ok on power. But wonder whether its either lost power over things stretching over the years. Needs a timing job doing. Waiting for parts to turn up at the moment.

Was wondering whether anyone had measured the diffetence in power between a fresh original engine and one needing a timing job?.

Does anyone have the figures to hand?

As hoping with a timing job it should pep it up a little.

If this doesnt do too much. Any other thoughts?.

Thanks Roland

Restricted exhaust/cat converters. Only mention it because it is so frequently overlooked on hi-mileage trucks.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking to change the exhaust system as its showing signs of deteriation.

This begs the question of longivity of the cats?. What sort of timeframe do they work from to?. Can these be cleaned?. Do we actually need them for the engine to run efficiently?.

Just curious. As i am happy to buy stuff. But dont have an endless pocket of funds.

Thanks Roland

If the cats aren't working I think you would get a below efficiency code. Computer controlled engines will try to keep the required air/fuel ratio even. About 14.7 to 1. As an example as your air filter gets more and more dirty the pcm will reduce fuel to keep the air/fuel ratio even. You won't get a rich black exhaust out the tail pipe, you'll get somewhat reduced power. Therefore keep your maintenance up. Air and fuel filter. Throttle body and MAF sensor cleaning, etc.

I agree on the catalytic converters, worth a check.

If you get out a stopwatch will it 0-60 within a second or two of the claims made when it was new

Hadnt thought too much about fuel air mix. But that makes perfect sense. Thanks for that reply.

Hadnt thought of drag racing it as it were. But that does also make a good datum to get. Does anyone know off the top of their head what the 0 to 60 would be?

Thanks Roland
