It only took 5 years but today I painted the cab and the bed. I still need to do the rear fenders and tailgate but progress is progress. It looks much better in pictures than it does in person. At least its one step closer to being back on the road.
Be proud no matter how bad you think it looks. I remember that exact day when I did my first painting panels too. Came out like crap but it took me 4 years too.
Your spray booth looks just like mine did.
A year ago holiday weekend I painted my 81 F100 flare side. only took me 4 years on the cab off frame rebuild.
Looks great now get the rest painted and truck together so you can drive it.

Congrats On a great job, well done too. You'll be amazed how many compliments you'll get when you're driving to town. Im amazed on all the hi-fives and thumbs up i get about my trucks and neither have great paint jobs. It took many years for me to realize those high $ perfect paint jobs usually aren't perfect if you look close enough. Life's short, finish it up and enjoy the ride.
I’m no expert, far from it, but it looks to me like all you need to do now is wet sand the orange peel and buff it out. The color coverage looks good and everything looks straight.
I'd mess with your gun some more and see what is causing the orange peel. I painted a fiberglass pickup canopy black once that orange peeled real bad because I was using the wrong temp range of thinner/reducer. I took a scotch bright pad (the kind sold at the paint store) and went over the whole thing to smooth it back down, cleaned it and re-shot it again with the correct stuff and it came out looking like glass.
OR you could wet sand / buff. So long as the paint is thick enough that should give you nice results, just add extra elbow grease and stay away from the edges.
Finished today with the rear fenders and the tailgate along with a few other small things.Ran out of paint so a lot of I'm leaving it as it is. A lot of wet sanding etc in my future. Now I just have to remember how to put the bed back on the frame and since its painted I'm going to have to bribe someone to help me. Thanks everyone for the positive comments.
Dennis,
You have put tons of time and work into your truck. It is always a good day when paint goes on! Thanks for posting the pictures. Its a great looking truck! I remember some of my first paint jobs 50 years ago. I had a lot of trial and error along the way and am still learning every time I pull the trigger. You will have some sanding but the color is there. take your time, you will be fine.
Regards,
Chris
