My '97 F-350 E40D tranny died last Saturday, 199k, guess it was too tired to make it to 200K!
Can anyone help me decipher what all is involved with swapping this out with a manual tranny? I know a guy that has same model year and make of truck with a manual, that has been rolled over. I might be able to get parts from him.
I just spent 1123 for a (kevlar)clutch, throw bearing, flywheel you got to disconect the steering shaft replace the pedal assembly, I think you might need a to use the other starter. I almost wish I had an automatic now. I can't sit at a light with my foot pushed in on the clutch. I was told the autos are easier on the motor. over all it shouldn't be to hard if you got another truck to take parts from. have fun I 've done to a couple of mustangs without parts cars pretty big headache the firt time the secound wasn't so bad after I knew what I needed and what need to be done.
I swapped out a c6 automatic for the t19. Alls i did was go to the junk yard and pull the needed parts off of a wrecked truck. You need a new flywheel, brake and clutch pedal assembally, the clutch master and slave cylinder, clucth, either a new floor pan or just cut a hole in the one you have now, new steering wheel colum or just cut the automatic shift lever off. Depending on the length of the e4od and the stick you want to swap in you may need to make a new cross member and due driveshaft mods. I can tell you for sure that with the T19, and ZF/S5-42 you do not need to modify these parts. But that was just on my truck wich had a c6 as the orginal tranny. I did not have to change starters and iam pretty sure there is no difference in starters between stick and non stick trucks but i might be wrong.
As far as a stick being harder on the engine i doubt they would be since a stick is much more efeceint and generates far less heat. As far as sitting with the clucth pushed in this should never be done since it chews up the pilot beering when sitting at a light the tranny should be in neutral with the clucth released.
