I am new to this board and just bought an 89 F150 4x4 with the 300/4 speed combo. I am hearing horror stories about the dual tanks so I will list my problems and hope you can tell me what they are.
1. If I let the truck warm up, I smell raw fuel in the cab until I drive. This seems to only do it on cold start up sitting still.
2. When I switch to the rear tank, the gauge shows full, but when I drive it about the amount of time it takes to normally come off of full, it goes to empty. The front tank registers normal all the time.
3. I just noticed a plastic fuel line(?)going from the selector (black thing on frame?) that is crimped. I do not know if it is a return line or main line, but it doesnt appear to be very strong.
The truck runs good, but has a slight stumble when cold under very light throttle. It has been tuned up and I cleaned the idle air bypass valve and throttle body. Not a big concern. Any ideas appreciated.
Dave, It sound like the sender on the rear tank is ready to be replaced. Question: Do you get the smell of raw gas reguardless of what tank you are using? If so, then I feel that your tank problem is not connected. I have seen 89' F-150's have the stumble problem that you are talking about. I know that it was only some type of sensor problem, but I forget what it was. I Will have to check my records at the office. I will post it once I find out. Good luck.
