C6 Highboy Pics Needed

Stupid question : Anyone have a picture of the their C6 shift arm in Park? 75 Highboy, rebuilt the C6, installed, and before cranking I want to make sure this thing is in "P" and not one of the other selections. Anyone that has done this knows the rod moves and you can easily get it out of whack on installation. I can't for the life of me remember what gear this thing is in, but know it is not park because the yoke will spin. Just thought I would ask a strange question.

Can't you get underneath and put it in park by hand and then make sure the yoke will not spin, to ensure it is in park? I seem to remember all the way back is park on the trans. it is done by moving the bracket under there coming off the side of the trans. And that means the transmission manual lever (bracket) had to be pulled forward. I had to do that one time when a shifter cable broke on my Bronco.

As far as the "rod" do you mean the steering column shift rod and the linkage connection point? Once confirmed in park (by hand on the trans) then P in the cab on the steering column indicator, tighten up the rod.

Or am I WAY off base on everything?

77/79: You are right...but,.....right now I feel it is in any gear BUT park as I can turn the yoke by hand. I wanted to ask the question because if you move the arm too far it will skip off the indent inside the trans. If that happens I have to pull the pan and trying to avoid that. IF no one has a good pic then I will move the arm the correct direction, toward park to see if if I can get "Park" and go from there. I guess to simplify, if I find Park it is not an issue but unhooked it is easy to move it to far. It is one of those stupid simple deals but one oops and it becomes a PIA. I remember when I rebuilt it I was playing with and thought, yep better make a note of that, but a year later for install I apparently did not make a note of it. It is the hook up at the trans, the rest is a non-issue. I completely rebuilt the steering column a month ago. Just trying to get all the final details buttoned up so I can crank it and test out the motor/trans rebuilds.

Thanks for the heads up on that issue. I did not know that about the internals of the C-6.

Can you go all the way forward (by pushing the bracket back) to low 1 and then push the bracket back carefully counting 6 clicks to park?

Yes you can BUT one direction it will go "beyond" and lead to pulling the pan. The other, if memory serves, it will stop, but here were are and I don't know which one goes which way. It is PIA to pull the pan too, not to mention I have it all nice and clean. I think I will just disconnect it all again, go up a click on the arm and see if it grabs park. Really there is only a stepped plate in there with a flat spring roller that gives the click click feel. You go to far and that spring/roller go all the way and it will not move back(locks it up) and you have to manually hold it to get it back on. Not an issue if everything is right, and hooked up....again, one of those stupid simple things that can get you when completely rebuilding a truck.

Sorry I don't know, I hope some HB owner chimes in with the pic you requested.

Got it. Apparently it was in Drive. Moved it up click by click wiggling the output and finally clunk, found park. For a point of reference on an FE Highboy with a C6 park on the shift arm is orientated up at an angle. Drive is about parallel with the pan rail.

Congrats and glad to hear you do not have to pull the pan.
