History: ive had this truck about a month. Bought, started driving home, and radiator was cracked that I never seen. Ended up haveing a blowed head gasket, and I never knew it was overheating because the gauge never worked properly. At any rate, new gaskets, injectors(remans), pistons, plugs(not wires) new map sensor, new egr(not the sensor), new IACV, new head, new radiator, throttle body is clean, new pcv valve, new front fuel pump(cleaned the tank), new fuel pressure regulator, new fuel filter, and new high pressure frame mounted fuel pump.
After all of this, the truck ran great! For a couple of days. Then, it died on me driving down the road. As I was losing power, not able to pull enough rpm to make it to 5th gear, down shift to fourth, third, second, first, then dead. Would not start. Got it home(via towing), this is when I did the map sensor. Helped, but not running. Starts, then dies. Then fuel filter, a little better. Starts, then dies. Then, checked fuel pressure. Only getting 10 psi(it holds this pressure). So, bad or weak fuel pump maybe although I could hear it hum in the tank. Replaced it, starts and will stay running, roughly, IF I feather the gas pedal. Seems to idle great for a couple of seconds after I get out of the gas. Good idle upon deceleration, but dies immediately. Tested for spark anyways, I have spark. Although my new plugs are black(lean condition?). Ran a code search via KOEO, and got one for engine running lean for longer than 15 seconds. Even though engine light isnt on.....finally, I pulled the Selector valve. Took it apart, and found a crap ton of rust dust in it. Cleaned out all I could see thoroughly with WD40 and lucas fuel system cleaner. The two pins inside the valve were stuck and would not move very freely unless I pulled up on it. So, I sprayed more wd40 and freed them up. Put everything back together(clean) as it came off. Got it to run on its own for about 10 seconds once I put it back on. Longest its ran since I did all the motor work. Double and triple checked everything I did. Now, it only runs if I feather the gas pedal and idles great upon letting off the gas and dies.
I did check the computer for visible signs of obvious damage, and didnt see any.
I'm stumped. Absolutely stumped. I need all the help I can get......
If you found all of that rust in the selector switch after the truck ran its possible that the tank and/or the rest of the fuel system is infested with rust. This could mean that those new injectors that you had are now plugged up because you ran the truck without checking and flushing the rusty fuel system. Check the injectors again and if there plugged up you need to drop the tank, clean it out or replace it and flush the entire system.
As far as I know, the truck was driven every week from what I was told. When I replaced the pump(granted it was after the fact) I didnt notice a lot of anything in the tank. However, I did not flush lines or anything. But i was told when i bought the truck, that he had installed a new front pump and cleaned both tanks. I had ruled those out, because the truck ran when I bought it, up to the point of failure. And ran when I fixed it, up to where im at now. Although, I have not done anything with the rear tank, because I cant put gas in it. The pump just shuts off. But the onky one I'm using, is the front tank.
2 other members were gave the wrong regulator, for their I6, if yours happens to be the one below, it isnt enough pressure to run it and not have issues. operating pressure should be well above 50psi, as in 55-60psi
So, I took my injectors out and they had that rust dust in them.
any of you guys have ideas for cleaning them, or am I stuck buying new ones agin?
Also, the pressure regulator I have is the PR18. So, it is also the wrong one.
Ok....so I took off my injectors, and this fixed the problem. I also cleaned my lines. They were full of the rust dust. Cleaned them up via 2 alligator clips, 2 pieces of wiring and a 9volt battery to actuate the pin inside the injector. Carb cleaner and lucas fuel cleaner for the cleaning. Filled the tank with premium shell and it runs great!
thank you all for the help!!
