My steering wheel is cracked and falling apart on my 66 F100. I was thinking of either a riveted wooden wheel or original black plastic. Suggestions and experiences are appreciated.
The original steering wheel is reproduced and sold by many of the usual suppliers; average price right around $200. Most people that go to an aftermarket wheel do so to get a smaller wheel to provide a little more room, especially if they have added power steering. A good quality aftermarket wheel and the necessary adapter will be $125 or more. I have installed smaller grant wheels on my trucks, but without a tilt feature in the column, I really did not feel I gained much space. Another concern is the cancelling mechanism for the turn signals - the aftermarket setups do not perform as well based on my experience.
If you have non power steering, you might enjoy the larger diameter stock steering wheel for the additional leverage. Mine is a mother to steer at low speed with a stock repo wheel. I can only imagine how hard it would be to turn the wheels with a smaller steering wheel.
I did that to mine, but I used an epoxy plastic bonder and sanded that as you would with body filler. I think it made a better bond than the filler would
I installed an aftermarket with tilt and a smaller wheel in mine but I have the old one still iff this could be an option for you pm me and we will work out shipping.
My wheel was cracked and missing pieces. I went with the epoxy filler route and repaint, which turned out ok. Did not like the skinny feel so I wrapped it with bicycle handle bar tape to build it up and then sewed on a wheel cover from Wal Mart. Works for me.
Another thing to consider with the smaller wheel is the the view of the dash. I'm 5-11" and look through the wheel and a smaller wheel would block that.
I went with a 14" in mine. It feels a little small at first, but you get used to it. I custom wrapped it to match the truck.
JJ for safety reasons don't have your door latch handles pointed up. In a oh crap situation you passenger could grab it, push it forward and the door will open. Not Good. They need to point down.
