New Project
have been browsing the forum for awhile so would like to thank everyone for the great ideas, info and tips already!
moving forward, I just purchased my first ever project.
looking for help on identifying everything. I believe it to be a 1967 inline 6 240. But have been told it may be a 68? I have attached a picture of the id plate, maybe some of you can help out.
Not much back story on it. Guy I bought it off of just selling it from a group of vehicles he got from an estate. No idea when it last ran or anything.
my goals:
new battery, tires and fluids and try to get it running. Hope to have it running and driving for next summer.
plan is to get drive train up to par then concentrate on the body.
end goal is lowered, notched frame, new engine and a great cruiser. But that is years down the road.
thanks for all the help!
Chris
You can decode the warranty tag easy enough on Fordification. 1968s started with C00,000. You have D55,902 which looks to have been made in July 1968.
The hood and bed look to be from 68-69 trucks. What kind of door handles do you have inside? A lever like the window crank or a latch inside the arm rest? 67s had that lever.
These trucks have been heavily modified over the years. Parts swapped with different ones from the junkyard, etc... That “ID” plate you pictured is just a warranty plate and is not the official VIN. Could have been moved over with a door.
VIN on these trucks is stamped on the top of the frame rail.

where will I find the VIN?
ive attached one more picture that may answer your door lever question but Im not sure, have a look. Tomorrow I can add detailed pictures.
i can appreciate the reality you mention that these have been modified over the years by mismatched parts. I do know it has a bunch of bondo work and the rear bumper clearly looks like something my grandpa would have made to pull some farm equipment around.
Have been looking at identifying a 240 vs 300 engine and have not found a concrete answer. I did see something about the A in the id tag means its a 240. B would be a 300. Anything on the engine that would tell me exactly what it is?
The column looks to have been a 3 speed at one point, The warranty tag indicates a “c” or Ford 3 speed. Is it a 4 speed in there now? Possible swaps are a Borg Warner T18 or New Process 435. NP435 has reverse on the shift pattern to the right and back (towards seat). T18 has reverse right and forward (towards dash).
I was able to scrape away enough rust to see the VIN on the frame, or at least enough to confirm the door vin matches the frame. So Im confident it is a 68.
Cbrown, you hit the nail on the head, was a 3 on the tree and converted to 4 on the floor. Reverse is towards the dash and after looking underneath, it is the T18. I still do not know if engine was changed at the same time. Have not found a way to differentiate a 240 from a 300 aside from the VIN. Any markings to look for on the engine?
I cleaned out the gas tank and replaced fluids and filters. Tried firing it up for the first time and found gas pooring out the carb. Have taken it off and will most likely pick up a rebuild kit this weekend. Found a tag on the carb, its a rebuilt autoline c814. Dont know a damn thing about them and cant find too much on them online. Have read alot about carter YF carb. Looks like both would cost me $200+. More then what I want to spend but if a rebuild doesnt work, are there other reasonable options?
Thanks again for all the help!

BTW the later BW T18 transmission also had reverse right & back like the NP435.
My 81 F100 T18 was like that and so is the NP435 that replaced it.
On the 240 / 300 deal think the only way is to measure stroke of the piston.
