Time (max one year from reset), distance, engine operating conditions. If the light isn't on, chances are you are not late. Follow the guidance in your owner's manual. You can always change ahead of the factory recommendations if it helps you sleep at night.
I am late according to my service guy. I think I’m going on 5000 mi. The light has come on every startup today.
is the viscosity monitored? Or is there a sensor that monitor oil level in pan?
The truck just uses a basic algorithm. There are no sensors to measure fill level or quality.
The algorithm is a formulation of time, miles traveled, engine hours, and engine load/temps over that period. It's basically just a more sophisticated dummy light.
I stick to a mileage number and just reset the message whenever it pops up

If you've only gone 5,000 miles, chances are they didn't reset the light during the last oil change. 5k miles between changes is plenty soon enough assuming you're putting on 10-20k miles a year.
