So I have a 1995 f350 obs 7.3 I have stage 1 intejtors 180 cc ... my stock turbo builds about 12lbs full throttle then smokes like crazy so I think I need a better turbo .... I have an e99 spyder and intercooler that I’d like to keep what would y’all recommend
No I haven’t tried either .... I didn’t want to throw money unless is was actually worth it or a permanent solution.... will a wicked wheel be enough for the bigger injectors or just get me by?? I don’t mind a lil smoke 😏 but 12 lbs isn’t enough
You are probably leaking drive pressure (exhaust), pressure into the engine, or the boost gauge is junk. Per my MAP I make 15psi on a stock tune, stock injector, resealed plenums, no uppipe leaks, etc. Basically a tight, solid engine. Find out where you are losing your airflow.
Most likely bad pre turbo exhaust leak, check your Up pipe for leaks, and build a boost leak detector. Rebuild the turbo with 360° and add a billet wheel you should see at least 30psi with that size injector on a stock charger. Also make sure the tunes are designed for your injectors and not the stock ones.
As Sicario X mentioned only known drop in performance turbo available.
They also offer a drop on s300 style turbine exhaust wheel, @Jarrett has one on his obs and likes it.
So, I did it kind of backwards and built my turbo first. I bought a 1.0 AR exhaust housing, a KC S300 turbine, an eBay 66/88 billet compressor wheel with associated housing, had the exhaust side ceramic coated. I built it for 200/80 injectors but to be honest it behaves better than the stock one with my puny 90cc injectors. I have hit about 24 psi in my +100 tune. I have actually considered going back to the a 60/80 compressor until I can get larger injectors though. Should give me a couple extra pounds of boost and have the turbo come on a little earlier. My truck is also a stick, so boost is not quite as consistent as with an auto.
Realistically you have a couple options, and it depends on what you want out of it and how much you want to spend.
You can stick with the stock turbo or build/buy an upgraded replacement. If you choose to build your turbo have it assembly balanced. I was able to find someone local to do it for about $40. KC has a turbo similar to what I built and they say at minimum a 180/30s and recommend a 238/80. If you want to stick with the stock turbo talk to KC they will help you pick the right setup and I highly recommend their upgraded exhaust turbine. It let's my small injectors keep a turbo that's currently too large behave better than stock.
Your next option is a T4 style turbo and there's a couple of guys who make kits. Using a more modern turbo will have it's ups and downs. The biggest downside is going to be money, and the supporting mods for installation. You basically have to have an E fuel system (probably should with larger injectors anyway). The T4 kits typically use the hole for the mechanical pump as the turbo oil return. On top of both of those you need custom plumbing. Now turbos have come a long way since the TP38, but for me I felt comfortable going with an upgraded stock turbo instead of going the T4 route.
Compound and twin turbo setups have been done, but that's probably overkill for your injectors and definitely all custom plus twice the turbo money.
I'm not a guru on this stuff, but I did look into it pretty heavily before deciding on my turbo. Someone else will probably be more informative than I am.
