My 94 F150 4.9L just started making a noise like its timing was too far advanced and the fuel milage has been lousy. So when I go to time it the mark isnt showing up any where I can see. I put white out on the flywheel notch and disconected the spout conector, still it wont show up in the light. Any suggestions
it is possible that the outer ring of the harmonic ballancer has moved. it has been known to happen on the 4.9. also, sometimes the harmonic ballancer has more than one notch.
thats exactly what happend to mine, and it was giving me all sorts of problems, from engine dying at stoplights, to very slow cranking.
you just have to time it the old fashioned way. remove the 1st spark plug, then move the crank till the piston is at the very top of that cylinder. a long straw can assist in this. once its at the very top, then mark the outer ring at 0* and time it from there.
The notch is NOT the timing mark. There are 2 timing marks, one at 0 and the other at 10°BTDC. You may have to crwl under the truck to see them on the pulley. Once you find them, mark them with paint. The timing indicator is not yhe numbered sector cast into the timing gear cover, that is a vestige of much earlier trucks. he timing indicator you want is located on the front of the engine right next to the pulley at about 9 o'clock. Remember to pull the SPOUT connector before setting the timing.
