Hey guys, I am relatively new with stuff so i got a few questions for ya, whats a better engine, 351m or 351W, what are the differences and what are the factory specs of an 89 351W. People keep telling me that winsors are crap and i got nothing to say back to them to shut them up because i really am not familiar with them, thanks
it a power comparison 1979 351m has 132hp at 3600 and 242 tq at 1600. A 1980 351w has 132hp at 36000 and 263 at 1800. Although the 351m with auto had 137hp at 3400 and 257 tq at 1800. They are close in power as you can see.
I think the main factor is money required to make them go. I know a lot of people are gonna say well you can spend just as much maybe a few hundred more and have a nice 351m motor. In reality that is correct but if you start looking into using reman, used parts then all of a sudden the windsor looks better. Not to mention all the 302 crap available is interchangable with the 351 except the lower intake for efi and intakes on carb, with the 302/351 being interchangeable then you have a whole slew of cylinder heads you can get used at a decent price. The real down side to the "m" motors are they weigh more than the windsor and they have a big block bellhousing bolt pattern so if you plan on running a c4 in the future you can forget it without spending some money. Just a though, still either way it is up to you. on the plus side you can convert a 351m to a 400m just by ordering a crank kit for a 400m as the blocks are identical between the two. Later
the 400 was 4 inch bore and 4 inch stroke. I would use a windsor it will be cheaper to build up and is just as strong if not stronger than the modified (351m). If the 351m was a better motor ford wouldn't have scrapped it in favor of the windsor.
The 351M has the same size main bearing journals as the 429/460. Its a work motor, but can be built to crank out some torque and HP. The 351M is simply a de-stroked 400.
