Nearing the completion of the construction of the shell of a home made truck camper, and wanted to tap into experience here RE installing new windows and door.
Camper shell is oil base marine paint over fiberglass over plywood.
Door came with foam seal under flange, so no question about seal except should I apply caulk/sealant around edge once installed? If so, recommendations on what to use?
Windows do not have any seal under flange. What is best between flange and shell? Butyl? Foam weatherstrip from box store? Plus, same question as door (if/how to seal once windows installed).
From my experience (40 plus years) doing auto glass, I would probably opt for 1/8" or slightly thicker round butyl if you can find it. Or check your FLAPS for automotive foam tape. The box store foam I have used seems to be more of an construction than automotive product, I'm not sure how well it will last in your application. As far as silicones, I would use either tub and tile or a good quality window and door caulk. Be sure the surfaces are clean before installing the windows and applying any sealants. I'd like to see some pictures of your camper. Back when I had kids and a pickup truck I dreamed of building one, I couldn't afford a ready made used one. I never got around to it. Now you have me thinking since my bride and I are nearing retirement, maybe I'll turn the P-100 into a hippie camper! Good luck with your project. John
