My truck has been running fine, until I drove home from work Friday, about 10 miles from work (and only about 2 from home) it started acting like it was missing, wouldn't accelerate and then when I had to stop at a red light it died completely.
No Service engine lights or any other lights on the dash.
I swapped out the CPS thinking that may be the issue with a new OEM part, but it didn't go away.
Truck has new air filter, and fuel filter isn't that old.
I tested the injector resistance at the 42- pin connection and got the following results
D - Two 3.8, Four 3.2, Six 3.4, Eight 3.2
P - All read 3.1
Does this mean the UVCH on the drivers side is going bad?
It wouldn't hurt to replace the drivers side. I think the drivers side is the easier of the two. Lots of videos on removing the valve covers on these. The new motorcraft style doesn't require the quarter mod.
Do you have a scan tool or an app? Best to get one and get some readings. I normally watch rpm, icp, Ipr,and voltage when I'm trying to diagnose a no start. This will help if you have a problem w the hpo system. Make sure you have over 1/4 tank of fuel and make sure oil level is good.
You can disconnect the icp this will give the ecm a generic 2300 psi reading. If your rig starts with it unplugged then you need a new icp. It won't run as well with icp unplugged.
Check that the tinnerman nut on Ipr is threaded on and tight. I've been guilty of this myself.
^^good advice from T-wood. I would add logging FUELPW, to confirm the IDM and PCM are syncing during cranking. Checking fuel pressure might be helpful at this point as well - easy method in my signature.
I replaced the harness on the driver's side and now the resistance is even at 3.1 across the board.
The truck still does the same thing though.
It does start, at idle it sounds like a miss and then it evens out but it stutters when I try to accelerate. I haven't actually taken it out of the driveway, but even just the little bit in the driveway I can feel the stutter.
Mbe,
Use your signature to give us some info on your rig. And general location. Climate can play a role. Maybe not today but it will at some point.
Im not running any tunes right now so I forget to mention remove your tunes or return tuning to stock.
How does it crank? Is it starting as quick as it should?
Thanks, I'll update my signature at some point. I'm in Chesapeake, VA. Temperature has been pretty moderate, but I did drive through a few DEEP puddles on my way home Friday when this started happening, but my air filter and everything around it was completely dry.
I'll pull the tune off of it tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.
I pulled the tune off of it and replaced the fuel filter this morning (old one only had 4000 miles or so on it) and it did the same thing in the driveway.
I decided to take it to a shop rather than chase problems, but of course on the way there it evened out and ran fine the whole way (10ish miles) after the first half mile or so of running rough.
I left it at the shop to see if they could find anything, but I'm not too optimistic that they will
Fuel problems and icp problems dont show up as a code. And unfortunately so many shops dont look any farther than a quick scan.
Good mechanics give up on these trucks. It happens alot. Im no mechanic but learned alot on this forum with some trial and error. Had to once my fleet mechanic buddy moved and local shops were clueless on these.
