i have a 1977 4x4 4speed f250 with a worn out 460. i have a great running 370 out of a school bus. Can i bolt it right in & are there any 370 preformance upgrades?
What bellhousing pattern does the 370 have? I'm guessing that it probably has the big truck (SAE?) bolt pattern, which surely won't work with any of the various Ford passenger car and light duty truck bellhousing bolt patterns.
370 is the "same" block as the 460 externally. Front engine accessory drives are different as the crank is a larger diameter. It may have an SAE adapter on it, but that might come right off. Crank shaft pilot hole would need to be checked. Flywheel, clutch & starter may be larger and may not fit in a pickup bell.
I'm not sure of the balance on a 370 so you might have to get a flywheel balanced. Does your 460 mount from the sides? You'd have to bring those mounts over. So, after all that you will find:
Performance? NONE to be had. It's a low compression truck engine. Small bore, small valves.
460s are like sand at the beach. Horse trade that 370 to someone with a dead dump truck and get a proper 460.
