I recently purchased a 1994 4x4 aode with what the guy said had 140xxx kms on it. I wanted to see what kind of shape it was in so I tore it down and inspected everything, overall it's in good condition. The only thing I found was in the 1-2 shift accumulator, one of the springs was broken in three pieces and there is some damage to the bore, accumulator, and bonded piston. I will try upload a couple pictures so you can see but at the moment I don't know how to fix the problem. Side not I am complete noob to transmissions this is the first one I've taken apart so if I call parts the wrong name I am sorry.
I cant tell how bad the wear in the case is from the picture, but its probably repairable.
Look for the Sonnax AODE/4R70W 1-2 accumulator repair sleeve kit.
This is an extremely common problem with this transmission. I fixed mine with the updated spring and piston a while back and have had no issues ever since. The Ford TSB states that scuffing on the piston bore in the case is not an issue.
It isn't likely you need the sleeve, just the new updated bonded piston, replacement spring, and new cover. They sell the kits with the sleeve or just new bonded piston, spring, and cover on ebay or any transmission supply website. I installed mine without the sleeve 30,000+ miles ago and have had no issues.
