Been planning on doing this for awhile, but now that my POS 2G is killing the battery overnight, the time has come. Alot of posts on this, and some confusion on my part.
My truck is a 93 F350 reg. cab with a 7.5. The existing alt. is a 2G small case with 7" bolt spacing,1 hole threaded 3/8-16.I am looking at a couple of alt. options from Powermaster
#47758 140 amp large case with 7" bolt spacing,1 hole threaded 3/8-16, OE only plug.
# 477491 155 amp small case with 7" bolt spacing,1 hole threaded M8 x 1.25, 1 wire only.
Anyone used one of these? Will the large case fit or should I go with the small case?
As far as wiring, do I just need to run a new 4 gauge min. charge wire with a 175 amp mega fuse between the alt. and the starter relay, leaving the old alt. fusible link and plug disconnected? If I am better with the small case unit with 1 wire, how does that get wired for the dash light? old alt. old alt.
Thanks,I checked out that thread, and some others. A lot of conflicting info. My 93 with a 7.5 was a small case 65 amp internal reg.with 7" spacing, serpentine belt. A number of posts said they had 8-1/4" spacing, and if you want more than 130 amps it would need to be large case.I know the Powermaster is pricey, but they were the only ones I could find that had enough specs available to figure out what would fit, and it did.155 amp, bolted right in. Works great so far. Ran 4 AWG cable I got from Gauge wire and cable, from alt to a 175 Megafuse, and then to starter relay.
I simply used the bracket and alternator from a 96 and installed on my 88. The short wire harness was also needed along with later style belt routing. There may be an easier way.
It was actually 1997 F-350 with a 95a alternator. I believe 93-97 are all the same in that regard. My 88 had a regulator on the outside of the original 60a alternator. All you need is the 93-97 belt and tensioner, just follow the diagram online.
