Automatic Transmission problems...
I lost the transmission at about 35K miles and Ford put in a remanufactured one and extented the warranty 3/36K on the tranny. Now just 4k miles later the (OFF) light on my overdrive keeps blinking and today its back in the dealer for service. it started to shift hard between 1st and 2nd gear.
I love the powerstroke but this tranny is the "*****z".....
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH THESE TRANSMISSION???
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO IN ADDITION TO THE REGULAR MAINT. TO IMPROVE THE LIFE OF THE TRANNY???
Thanks,
I have a 2001 Excursion PSD with the 4 speed automatic. My X only has 39,000 miles on it. What I tow with my X isn't even worth mentioning, (7X10 utility trailer, 17ft. fishing boat) when compared to what it is capable of.

Mileage I have driven the vehicle 7,000, total miles 58,000.
Well, I got my truck back from the dealer yesterday. It seems that the solenoid that actuates a fluid valve inside the tranny was stuck so they had to pull the tranny and replace the part. The repair was covered under the extended 3/36K warranty I got on the tranny when it was replaced. I really hope this is the end of my tranny problems.
What kinds of additional filter systems are available? Has anyone here installed them?
Thanks,

For tranny rebuilding (outside of the Ford warranty)
I think will be sending my tranny here if and when it goes and I have the time to be down.
How did you get Ford to split the cost of your refurb transmission? Was the old one under warranty? My F350 Diesel has 49,000 miles and I'm told I'll need a new transmission. Does anyone know why Ford transmissions have so many problems? Will they not stand behind their product?
Thanks for any insight you can give!

I'm like scared to death about adding any house power at all. I am putting in the banks Stinger plus today and I am freeking out. These trucks were made to haul heavy loads and pull big trailers what is up with this. I had a 1 ton duelie Chevy that we pulled our Dragster all over the USA and never had a single problem with the tranny. The 454 we had was just as powerful as any of the PSD trucks. I fact it make way over 450 hp and a boat load of torgue. Is GM that much better? Maybe I should have bought a Duramax
I only had my truck for approximately 7,000 miles and 5 1/2 months. I took it to Mr. Transmission for a diagnostic, then to the Ford dealership, then back to the Lincoln, Mercury dealer where I bought the truck.
In order, Mr. Transmission, said costs would be anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000, depending upon what else blew up inside of the tranny as they were going to rebuild mine basically from the ground up.
The Ford dealership, told me flat out after I had paid a $65.00 diagnostic fee, that they could work one of two ways, tear the existing transmission down for a $500 tear down fee, or put in a remanufactured transmission for $3,200. I told them to sit tight for a day so I could check with the dealership I bought the truck from.
I called the salesman I bought the truck from and told him what I was going through and he asked me if I would bring the truck by their service department so they could take a look at it. I took the truck over to their shop and it was the same thing. $500 for a teardown or $3,200 for a remanned. I told them I would like to speak with the owner of the facility. Well that didn't get to far because the owner informed the service manager to contact Ford and see if they could work with me on this. When Ford said yes, the owner authorized the service department to split the bill three ways. Long story short, I ended up paying $817.37 for a remanufactured transmission from Ford with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and I can say that I will be taking service of things I can't do to that dealer even if I am paying slightly higher than an independent can charge, because they went way out of the way to work with me on this as I had no warranty left and I let the wife talk me out of the extended warranty on the truck.
Sorry to be so wordy.

Welcome to the Ford Tranny Problem Club...
I, like you, had tranny problems early on (just after the warranty expired) and like you got the bad news about replacement costs but to Fords' credit they agreed to split the cost by having me purchase an extended warranty (cost me 500 bucks) but that was all! They rebuilt the tranny and extended the warranty another 3 yrs. 36K all for my 500 "contribution". The program has a name but I don't recall it...anyway I have to give Canby Ford in Oregon City a KUDOS for going above and beyond what I would have expected. Doing this may be in some small way an admission that tranny problems with the 4R100 are common and this is Ford's way of dealing with them, but it worked for me.
Only one problem though and it may just be my imagination so anyone with knowledege of this symptom please chime in...
Before I took my Ford in for the tranny rebuild it was common for me to switch out of OD before desending a grade while towing to take advantage of what little backpressure a diesel builds and need only minimal brakng with pedal. I realize that it's not much but I got used to seeing the RPM's rise and the feel of control while desending what little there was. Also I got in the habit of manually downshifting on really steep grades and slow speeds to take advantage of engine braking. Since the rebuild I can do neither...if I take it out of OD on a grade the R's drop to idle and I free wheel on down the hill. Same with manual downshifting to 1st or 2nd...r's drop to idle with NO engine braking at all. I took it back to the dealer who rebuilt it and since they could pull no codes and a test drive was good they refused to tear it down, instead telling me that it is finally working like it's supposed to and should never have worked liked I described. I think he's blowing smoke up my a$$ but Canby Ford won't budge. Told me to go buy an engine brake.
Any thought's or comments? I would really like to know if any other PSD's with the 4R100 trans is doing this...Thanx
Theo
