5 speed shifting problem

I have a 99 F150 V6 5 speed. It doesn't like to shift into 1st gear from a stop. This seems to be a common problem but haven't really found the answer yet.

I switched to synthetic fluid and it didn't make much of a difference.

I have noticed if I hold the clutch in for 10 seconds it goes into gear just fine. It seems like the hydraulic clutch is taking time to build up the proper pressure. The quicker I try to shift the harder it is to put into gear. The fluid level is fine and it doesn't appear I have a leak.

Could it be the Clutch master cylinder ?

Does it sound like the Slave cylinder ?

Does it sound like the transmission is bad ?

Thanks

I seem to have trouble with mine too. I dont know if the cause of my problem is the same as yours but to get around it ( I know it might seem silly) I shift to second then 1st with out letting out the clutch. I never have a problem when I do this.

Usually a bad slave cylinder will have fluid leaking out of it and that's fairly common. It doesn't take much of a leak.
A bad master cylinder will usually make the pedal really spongey or have a lot of free play in it.
How much free play does the pedal have before there is resistance? There should be nearly none.
A sticky pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft can cause your problem too. The clutch releases like it should but the pilot bearing keeps the transmission's input shaft turning.
I think the first thing I would try doing would be to bleed the clutch and see if that makes any difference. If it does then you probably have a bad master or slave cylinder.

Still might be in luck. I had about an inch of play in the pedal. pulled back on the pedal a few times and that helped for awhile. Don't know why that would help. If it is supposed to have almost no play then I'd say the master is bad. I'll try bleeding and see if that helps. Thanks for the help and I'll let you know.

Well I just got done bleeding the clutch. Might have made a little difference, I'll know better when I drive to work today. I have at least an inch of play in the pedal, though. Sound like a bad master cylinder ?

Thanks

Take a look under the dash while you push in the pedal and see if it moves the pushrod to the master right away.
I had one the other day that the pedal bushings were worn out and it wasnt moving the pushrod until you got past the free play in the bushings.
