Auto body tips

Hi guys I am starting body work on my 78 and I want to try and keep as much of the original paint as possible since it has really cool patina. However the drivers rear quarter has some extreme damage to it as seen in the picture. I have a stud welder and some body hammers but have never done body work before. Any advice on how to pull these dents out?

I would probably find a donor bed and replace that section. but you can fix it with enough time and effort.

it's going to require some shrinking that's for sure , there's some serious stretching there. if you want to learn body work you have it all there.

I have a line on a bed for relatively cheap. I did consider cutting the whole side of it off as well. Hoping to check out the donor bed next week.

Ok what ever you do you will not be able to save the patina and even more so that you took the paint off that dent area.
Before that with the right tools and know how you could have gotten that dent out and left the patina.

I also see where the paint was removed there are pin holes. This is a sign of rust / rot / thin metal so if you go and use your stud welder it will burn thru.
You will need to remove more paint to weld more studs to pull that around to look good before you can add body filler, not more than 1/8" thick.
But more paint removed for the studs and then body filler there goes the patina.

Going to replace that bed side or the whole bed ..... yep no more patina.
And please do not try and do the fake patina as it looks just like FAKE PATINA!

So what is the plan leave it or fix everything and paint the truck?
I went with fix everything and paint.

4 years cab off frame rebuild and yes I did all the work myself even the paint!
