I use a small $3 analog voltmeter and a jumper wire. See www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html for directions. On a '94, the check engine light will also work for code output. If you go that route, all you need is the jumper wire (paper clip has been known to serve the purpose) to connect the self-test input with the self-test output connections, then read the codes as flashes of the CEL.
FWIW, I've seen a few discussions where I think the code reader misread the codes, so I don't know if I would trust them.

If you want to go the code reader route, you need an EECIV/OBDI reader. They will handle all Fords up thru '95. In '96, Ford went to the standard OBDII setup, which is what Autozone showed you. The EECIV/OBDI readers are considerably less $$ than the OBDIIs. You should be able to get one for under $50.
