I have taken our 1951 Ford F-3 Pickup to several shops regarding the loose steering – 3 -4 inches play with the steering wheel. So far have replaced pitman arm and drag link, Installed rebuilt steering gear and shaft from Lares, replaced right and left tie rod ends. The last repair ship showed me the steering spindle arm connection, then having the steering wheel turned and steering spindle connection flexing but not turning the wheels. To fix the problem the spindle arms needs to be replaced. I am not sure how this metal part could be a problem. Any input here will be appreciated.
Looking for the part on the web so far have not found one
Hard to tell buy the video whats going on, did you have the king pins looked at? With these old trucks theirs going to be some play with steering & suspension components .... does it wander all over the place when driving it?
This video addresses this issue. I ran across it after I looked at an F1 with excess play in the steering. Looks fairly straightforward, but I understand that this is an extremely sensitive adjustment, just a fraction of a turn takes you from excess play to stiff steering.
Very interesting video. I will put this on my to do list. My truck has very loose play in the steering wheel. I will address this in a separate thread some day.
I read somewhere else that if you go too tight on the adjustment the steering will bind at the stops.
these old style steering boxes always have a little slop. That’s why in the old movies when you see folks driving they’re constantly turning the wheel back and forth.
Found the attached arm on the web, looks like what I need for replacement, missing the ball on the end. How does one know if the arm is bad or just the ball.... This story goes on and on
By chance do you have a diagram that shows the part numbers. Maybe the arm is OK and can find the ball and cup parts and replace them since I have not be able to find the arm on the web..
F-1 thru F-3 all use the same piece. The ball is welded into the arm on them. I believe some outfits are selling new ***** that can be pressed in after grinding out the old one, then re-welded, but there is no Ford part number for the ball. You may be able to find a new OEM arm with the ball, p/n is below.
Did you try tightening the nut where the arm is held to the spindle? If I understand your previous posts, it sounds more like the whole arm is just loose in the spindle.
