What's involved with replacing My flathead with a carberated smallblock(289/302) Truck still has the original front suspension so are there adaptive motor mounts out there? I have a 5 speed currently matched to the flathead(info) Alos...what's involved with a 12V change. How does that affect current gauges ? Lights?? Thanks in advance to all.
It is a shame you are ditching the flathead as I go for stock rigs. Since I am also in NY, can I call dibbs on it and any other stock parts you are discarding? I may even be close enough to lend you a hand on some of your work. As for a 5 speed, that is curious...
Anyways for the meat of it, yes, you can convert to 12 V. There are direct 12V replacement lamps/bulbs available from most auto part stores. The gauges will need reducers and you will need to likely swap the direction of the wire going through the loop of the AMP gauge. You also replace the generator and regulator with an alternator/regulator (which may be regulated internally or externally). You will also want to get a 12V coil and swap the terminals (since I presume you are also switching to negative ground).
There are many threads on 12V and small block conversions on this forum with details. Don't be afraid to ask specific questions and we love pictures, so show us your rig!
I am just gathering info and it looks like a lot of work on the conversion to 12volt. Yes it has a 5 speed which I like for long distance. I'm located outside Buffalo NY
Nice truck Checker! If you are going the 302 route, your coil and alternator setup will already be 12V so that work is done for you. That leave lights and gauges. Again, Lights are simple to get 12V equivalents for your existing 6V. Unfortunately, (and I am embarrassed that I for got to mention this in my initial post) the 302 sending units are incompatible, even with voltage reducers, for the fuel, oil, and temp gauges. There are many options on dealing with the cluster at all different price points. I too am in western NY state, so don't hesitate to reach out if you need a physical hand, especially with the wiring/electronics.
Checker, I don't want to get to precise on a public forum, and I don't think you should either. I'm not next door, nor too far away. Unfortunately, I think your account is too new to send/receive PM. That feature gets enabled after you gain some positive "reputation" as determined by thresholds the admins set. If there was a localish meetup, we could exchange contact information in person there, but I'm not aware of anything due to the current world situation. Let me do some digging...
Check out TERZMO on B Body..or Abody or C body sites...or NY Gun Forum...I would of used TERZMO here but for wharever reason the name got bounced. I don't think inputting a town, at the least is risky...sorry I asked
