Overheating while towing

I picked up a 2015 f250 6.7 psd from a dealer 1 week ago with 117k. I put about 100 miles on it before I hooked up my RV and headed to CO. My camper is a bumper pull and 6k dry and we probably have it loaded to 7k. I pulled all though Texas with no problems in 95 degree temps. We made it to Colorado Springs (not at elevation) and I got a high temp warning and immediately pulled off to the side of the road. I let it cool down and mad it another 4 miles before the temps shot up again. After a longer cool down, we made it to a campsite so we at least had a place to stay tonight.

-Engine Oil temp has been pegged at 240 degrees
-when I pulled over and popped the hood, coolant was puking from the Degas
-I can hear a whining sound while at idle ( this was happening before the over heating issue)
- while pulling into the campsite - the car was. Not overheating but the AC started blowing warm air.
- was driving around 65 mph with slight grades here and there.

Do you have an idea as to what it could be? If it’s something like a thermostat or water pump, We’ll get it repaired here and go about our trip. If it’s a head gasket, I would like to have our setup towed about an hour away so we would have a place to stay during the repair.

I have 3 young kids in tow so I’m stressing on where we’ll sleep and not being stranded on the side of the road.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

At any point when it was getting hot did you hear the cooling fan? It is extremely loud when it is running at speed. If you didn't hear the fan there is a good chance the fan clutch is not engaging.

No - I don’t think I’ve ever heard it turn on. Any reason why it did fine the first hotter part of the trip if the fan wasn’t working?

You nailed it. I took it in this morning and it was the fan clutch. Wish I was at home so I could tackle it myself. It’s only about an hour of labor so not so bad.

Thanks for your reply. I was praying it wasn’t the head gasket.

Glad it was something easy. Head gaskets are rare on 6.7's. If they are running hot its due to lack of coolant or lack or airflow most the time.
