My 02 V10 with 18,000 miles has just developed a ping in the last month. I notice it mostly just cruising on interstate roads on slight inclines at 70-75 mph. when in OD (Auto Trans.) It does not matter if I am towing or not. I have tried different gasoline brands and stations (87 Octane). I am wondering if I disconnect the battery will the computer reset and then re-adjust the timing to get rid of the ping??
I also experienced pinging the last time I towed my trailer, I was accelerting up a hill. Had 87 octane. I bought 89 on my next stop and no more ping. I have been told I need to have it looked at by dealer.
my dealer said the ping is normal...........everything is normal at the ford dealer under warranty.................but one day over, i am sure that will change
I have developed a ping at 69,000 miles, that I haven't found an answer for. The dealer checked and regapped the plugs, they were .006" out, and also did an injection service. Still have it. Not sure what else can cause it, any insite would be appreciated.
I just bought a new 31' trailer, on the way home up a hill the truck downshifted hit around 3500 rpm and pinged like crazy. I just hooked up to it again to pull the trailer around for the weekend and get used to it, this time I had premium gas in it, and no more ping.........it could have just been a bad tank of fuel, I don't know yet but on premium, no more ping.

These posts just make me cringe, we had to trade my wife's 4X4 3.0 5 spd Ranger flareside supercab in after 5 times in to see the dealer for pinging. We too were told it was normal, in fact one retard of a service writer said his 5 liter 1/2 ton had always done it and had done it so bad that the only thing that he could do was turn up the radio. This did NOT give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about my neighborhood Ford stealership. But after we visited a couple other dealers, we could not get the problem fixed. Maybe they just didn't care enough to want to spend a bunch of time chasing a problem on one little vehicle, that is what I suspect. I KNOW the problem can be found, but WILL they ? In our case they wouldn't, so we got rid of it. It pinged so bad you almost couldn't drive it, it pinged all the time, in every gear, on every road, no matter which type of gas. So I feel bad to see posts like this, I hope my past experiences don't become the same as all of yours. There IS a solution, someone just needs to try and find it. If you go to BlueOval.com there are phone numbers for some of the top-brass at Ford. I tried a few of the Ford service numbers and talked to a couple extremely rude women who told me nothing. Good luck to you in your quest, I hope you find the answers.
I was told by my dealer / service dept. the reason my trucked pinged was because the fuel filter was clogged, i was also told it is a required item to change at 15,000 miles, at 18,000 miles totally clogged / i doubt it. I asked for an estimate of the total cost and was told $38.00 + tax, i just wanted to make sure it was not $380.00!!!. i said go for it / you guessed it, my truck still pings!!
I had a significant loss of power at about 3,000 miles and 7,500 miles. I had to reset the computer twice, and both times it ran great again. This would be an easy approach to see if it corrects the pinging. I also read that the V-10's like to run on chevron 87 gas with tecron. I started using this a couple of months ago, and it seemed to make a noticeable difference.
