Hi Guys,
Its been a very long time since I've had a CB in any vehicle. I am thinking of buying one and have read the above threads. I probably really wont use it that often, but still would like to mount a fairly nice unit in my truck.
Is SSB still used often and do the units with weather channels really provide good info.? I was thinking of buying one with both of these features?? Also would like to get a discreet as possible antennea. Would using a converter from JC Whitney to make my existing AM/FM antennea a dual purpose be worth it? Or Midland offers a cell phone like glass mounted antennea?
Any pointers for this out of the loop CBer would be great!
Galaxy 99. It has a DXV or something like that in front of it, don't have the box here. Really powerful, really tunable. Don't waste your time with cobra junk. 99 comes with echo, robotic voice, voice synthesiser (sp) and roger beep. you will have to have it converted for citizens band use, but where you buy it they should be able to do it for you.
Cobras will out talk ,,,,out last,,,,, out perform,,,, I've had several Galaxies thier nice too but they are bad about COLD Solder Joints and having to be repaired !!!!!!!! Get A Cobra 29 or 148 Cobra add a Echo board,, Swing Kit,,, Expo Kit By A Good Tech.,,,,, That will last you many many years to come!!!!!!!!! So 77 Nothing wrong with either one really but 17 years expierience Cobra will out perform & Out last Alot of radio's the only thing is you got to add your xtra features you want,,,,Be sure to find a GOOD tech!!!!!!! Have A Good Day Big Oh
The Cobra is a decent radio but it all depends on what you want to do with a radio. If you just want to hear bear reports or talk close range about any will work but if you want to get some range the top end Galaxy,Connex or Ranger would be what you want.Don't skimp on the antenna though it makes all the difference in the world.I wouldn't waste my time or money messing with the through glass cellular type or the am/fm conversion they don't work well at all.
The sideband is nice but it all depends on your area if there will be anyone using it.There isn't that many people using it anymore in general.
The weather band is a pretty handy feature on one but I just get my weather from the local radio station on the stereo.
Critter, You got part of it rite the antenna means everything I can take a $50.00 Radio With A Good Wilson 1000 Mag. Mount Or 5000 Mag. Mount Or A Simular Antenna and can out talk any Galaxy Or ??????? Or at least as good as them So A Good COBRA 148 am/ssb radio would be good for a first radio,,, put xtra channels, echo board if you want it or anything else you want done to it !!!!!!! "have A Good Day" Big Oh
i have a cheap cobra in my truck with two fiberglass antennas on it and it will pick up clear for about 8-15 miles dad has a texas ranger in his semi that was profesionaly tuned and stuff it has an antenna specialy built for it and it is clear has good distance i duno it depends on what you like dont like they can all work just as good as another it just depends on how much money you want to spend on it
Big Bubba,,,, Thats rite it depends on the antenna,,,,,,But read up on dual anteenas they only work rite when thier 18 feet apart and Co-phased rite together!!!!!! Go to cbtricks.com for mo info OK Bubba A Good Single is the best by far C Ya ""Have A Good Day"" Big O

Yep,the antenna makes a big difference.I wasn't running down the Cobra in any way,I ran a modified Cobra for a long time and it done just fine.I run an export radio now that has "slightly" more kick than I could get from my cobra though.I used to run a palomar box with the cobra but now I get the same effect without the external box.
Your right about the dual antennas, they might look cool but unless you have at least 8 feet between them(like on the mirrors of a big truck) they just don't work as well as a single antenna.
Don't forget to set the SWR,it is the life and death of your radio at stake.
Look up Copper Electronics, they have whatever type of radio your looking for...
i have a galaxy and it is a monster i have never heard any cobra or uniden as good but they like to go in now and then for a tune up and uniden sold cobra to maxon i think so dont get a new one they r only a name and if u want what there rep stands for then get a uniden they are the same on the inside for the most part as the older ones from a few years ago, and take the time to set it up mine was done in a afternoon then i went and got a pro to set the swr do this or any radio will be crap and the antenna is important too fiber glass isnt as good as a steel whip for function but look a lot better i have a uniden in my car and a K40 on top too i have a galaxy w/ 2 fiber glass firesticks on the truck and the truck can smoke the radio in the car i think i get 10-20 miles on any given day from the truck and about 4 from the car

my cobra has wether band and it works fine i first had a single coax then went to dual and run em to both antenas and it works better afterward even though the antenas are only about 6 foot apart
Id stick with something simple like a Cobra 29 but stay away from the soundtracker and weatherband feature. You should be able to find a used cobra 29 at any CB shop. Check at truckstops for a CB shop or in phone book. As to antennas, you wont need anything fancy- a magnetic mount with steel whip will do- preferably one that allows you to swap out the cheap black/gray coax for 18ft of copper mesh coax. Cobra 29 is a rugged workhorse in comparison to a high dollar 'big' radio that will only get stolen.
