I am thinking of taking a trip to the mountains and will need to purchase so chains but i am having troubles locating a set big enough. 40" tires are hard to shop for.
any refferals?
9.00x20 truck chains might come close, or maybe 11.00x24.5. Buy the ones for single wheels. The duals are easy to make two tires worth, but you have to cut them down and add a side to get two tires worth. They will be extra heavy duty so you shouldn't be able to break them.
You will have to call for your tire size (it is not a popular size), but, they should be able to order a set for you. Most likely you will have to go for real chains and not cables.
FWIW: Most chain sets are only good for about 300 miles of on- road-use, so whatever you buy, look at it on the basis of how easy it will be to repair in the middle of nowhere on a 40 inch tire.
The more aggressive the links, the harder to repair with a simple connector to get you by the next 30 miles.
