ok so here's the deal,
I've got a 77 f-150 with a 351 m-block. when i first start it up cold oil pressure is just fine. once I am running at normal temp the oil pressure is down to like 5 psi, so the gauge says. i have tried to switch the guages and get the same result. I put in a brand new oil pump and water pump. this was quite a task which i would rather not discuss as it was a total pain in the neck due to various reasons. after i get it all back together i get the same result.....this was really frustrating to find out.
any suggestions??? please help
I had the same problem just a few days ago, changed the oil and got rid of the junk fram filter. I used castrol 10W40, napa gold filter, and a quart of lucas oil stabalizer and pressure is just fineI was down to 5psi or less at idle now it is at 25-30psi. I think the filter helped out the most I heard bad things about the fram so I changed it to that Napa Gold .
The orange Fram filters are essentially junk, despite their reputation.
There is a site around somewhere that compares oil filters. The guy cut open a Fram and found cardboard end caps and a cardboard back flow valve.
Actually, one of the best filters he found was the good old Motorcraft you can buy at Walmart for $2.50. It's really a Pure.
Strangely enough, there was no discernable difference between the NAPA Silver and the NAPA Gold, except for the price. I believe he said these are actually AC filters.
If changing the filter and oil worked for you, great. I'd certainly try it before tearing down my engine.
The last part of the engine to get oil is the lifters and valves. If the valves are quiet, they are getting enough oil. That doesn't mean that you don't have some wear. I would try a heavier oil and filter change.
I assume that you cleaned your oil pickup screen when you changed the pump.
You might want to think about picking up a used motor cheap and tear that down and rebuild, while you have your truck running.
