I have a new to me '72 351W and I'm lost on a few engine components that I can't identify. Sooner or later I'll be asking for advice on eliminating the emissions devices to achieve a simpler vacuum system. I have searched this and other sites looking for identification without success. Often the routing of the three vacuum lines is discussed, but not what this device is which installs in the thermostat housing so to presumably add or take away vacuum based on engine temp. You'll see in my photo that two of the vacuum posts are broken off and I need to order another one. If I knew what to call it! Various parts websites don't show it. All help is greatly appreciated!
The plugged bottom port is now broken off completely.
Thats a thermostatic vacuum port. What year is the 351w from? Or was this a car engine that was swapped into a truck? That port can be eliminated as replacement is not cheap.

Temperature operated vacuum switch. Usually controlled vacuum to the distributor advance/retard function. Can be eliminated and route the vacuum hose from the ported vacuum source on the carb straight to the outer port(advance) on the distributor. Inner port was the retard function.
Yes, I feared that this would be an expensive piece if I could find one at all. I'm happy to hear that I can eliminate it without any trouble. This also answers another question I had regarding why I had two vacuum advance ports on my distributor.
So I understand correctly, I will plug the thermostat housing as well as the inner port of the distributor vacuum advance. Then ported vacuum to the outer (which it already has).

No need to plug the inner port on the distributor. Just leave it open. Just make sure the vacuum hose is routed to the ported vacuum on the carb. This is the one that's fed off the port above the throttle blades so it doesn't pull vacuum until the throttle is opened
