Factory A/C

I have replaced the entire system except for the evaporator core ( it is good and clean ). I have a Sandsen rotary compressor and 134A. The expansion valve is the adjustable type. How does this get properly adjusted ? I have 65 degree air at the vent and ice building on the valve and both hoses at the core. I think my pressures were 23 / 170. I am running a ( shrouded ) seven blade flex fan moving a lot of air even at idle. I am pulling a lot of air through the E core as well.

An actual expert will chime in here soon I'm sure, I'm just an amateur. You are running 134a? What was the temperature outside when you took these readings? They seem a little low on both sides to me and, in my experience at least, freezing often means it needs more refrigerant.

I would guess you are low on Freon this time of year according to gauge readings

The factory expansion valve is regulated with an internal wax pellet. There is no adjustment, your pressure is suspicious also. If you have 170 on the high side and 23 on the low you definitely have a high side blockage. Whats your total charge weight?

I am not sure of the weight or readings. I don't know about Auto air. The shop does. But they have not worked with this type of expansion valve in yrs and can not remember the correct procedure. And yes it is adjustable,1/4 allen wrench.

Why did you go with the adjustable valve?
On the 80 - 86 trucks there was talk that the adjustable one don't work all that great so we go with a fixed valve.

I am in the middle of getting the factory AC going on my 81 F100, swapped in from a parts truck, and will be going with R134A
I am going with a blue fixed valve as that is what the parts store calls for and others say is good, it looked like a black one I pulled out.
Also I hear rule of thumb when going from R12 to R134A only 80% of the R12 charge goes in.
BTW mine is a standard cab not extended.

Good luck and let us know how you make out as it may help others down the road.

I think your confusing the later trucks that used an orifice tube and this generation which used an actual valve.

Going to need a picture, the stock expansion valve has no external adjustment.

This is what the auto parts store sent me. Today the shop said that it could be the probe going into the E-core. The compressor is not cycling (stays on). They changed the location of the probe coming from the expansion valve and wrapped it with a black tar tape. On the way home it got down to 58 degrees and no icing. Just a lot of condensation. They said the pressures are right on. I don't know what they are. What is the name of the switch that has the probe going into the E-core ?
