first there is no need to remove the intake, but if you do you will need to replace the gaskets. Autolite double platinums and autolite professional series plug wires are the best. the hardest ones to reach are the 2 furthest back on the engine on the drivers side. to get the one right under the intake i used a boot puller. for the very last one i used a long pair of neele nose pliers and just pulled on the wire. to get the plugs i used a long extension. for the last plug be careful because there are a lot of wires and not much room to work with. when replacing plugs put antiseize on the threads. on the wires remember the silicon grease on both ends of it. have patience. good luck!
ok i changed the plugs yesterday.not as bad as i thought it would be! i used a lot of exstenstions,swivelknuckel,11inch needle nose,long screw driver and of course plug socket with good rubber.you were right about patience,taking my time and not getting in a hurry gapping all plugs, it took me about one hour. the hardest thing to me was getting the back boot off/on.it was a tight job but i wouldent be afraid to do it again.thanks for the help guys!...........oh yea when i put the plugs in i used a swivel that was slightly stiff,this kept the plug in a straight line with the exstenstions and i putt it straight in.thanks again!
Looks like I'll have to tackle this soon on my 1992 2.3L.It's got almost 200,000 miles on it and I'm scared to say that the owner probably never changed the plugs.I hope that everything goes okay.By reviewing these posts,I've put together a list.Check over it and make sure that this is all that I need. -
* 3/8 Ratchet (Got It)
* 13/16 Spark Plug Socket
* Spark Plug Boot Puller
* Universals For The Ratchet (Are those the little U-Joint deals?)
* Needle Nose Pliers
* 8 Autolite Spark Plugs (Is this the best to use?)
I think that I'll go ahead and replace the plug wires while I'm at it.
* 3/8 Ratchet (Got It)
-make sure you have a 12'' extension
* 13/16 Spark Plug Socket
-double check to make sure it is 13/16" and not 5/8"
* Spark Plug Boot Puller
-the four on pass. side can be pulled by hand, the first on drivers side also. the only one i was able to use the puller for was the second one on drivers side and maybe the one directly under the intake. don't waste your time using it on the last one, use the LONG needle nose pliers.
* Universals For The Ratchet (Are those the little U-Joint deals?)
-yes the u-joint deal
* Needle Nose Pliers
-LONG needle nose plies-like 11" or 12" long- are required for the last two on drivers side
* 8 Autolite Spark Plugs (Is this the best to use?)
-Autolite double platinum
I think that I'll go ahead and replace the plug wires while I'm at it.
-you are going to have to because if they have never been changed in 200k mi. then they most likely won't come off in one piece. 200k is way too long for plug wires anyway. Autolite professional seires plug wires are good and cost about $30.
GOOD LUCK AND BE PATIENT!!! ESPECIALLY ON THE LAST TWO ON THE DRIVERS SIDE!
Thanks man.I appreciate the feedback.I believe it is 5/8,but I can't remember for sure.I'll check to make sure.
Now,on the plugs and the wires.What are the best times to change them in the future?I'm thinking 50k miles on the plugs and 100,000k miles on the wires??
Also,where can I pick up a set of those needle-nose pliers?I've never heard of any that long lol...
I'll scratch the puller.I'll buy the pliers with the money I saved on that .
double platinum plugs last 100k and wires, i think, are 60k (ill have to check).
any tool store would have the pliers. I know sears does. maybe check at the auto parts stores.
i used a straight shaft with the universal on the end
Alrighty.Thanks again.So 100k on the plugs and 60k on the wires?I'll call my local parts store tomorrow and see if they have the pliers.I need to change the plugs ASAP.I think that it might help out my truck a little anyway .Or at least start taking care of it again.I baby this thing lol.I think that I'll do the driver's side first and then move to the passenger's side.That way,I'll have the hard part out of the way.
