Power Mirror Sticking

Hello,

Was wondering if someone has had this problem. The passenger side mirror only extends out about half way. Was wondering if it’s something minor that I can fix or will be a dealer visit.

thx

You're talking like when going from "non-tow" to "tow" position? Extension not fold... that's a new one - almost all the problems I've seen complaints about on here have been folding issues, including myself. Mine was just a passenger squealing noise which I fixed with silicon spray. Have never heard of the extension motors sticking before - that's really odd and NOT really easy to get at either. I guess you could try gently pulling out on it while someone presses the switch and see if it goes - just don't tug too hard on it!!! It could also be that it was out all the way once and some idiot got mad and hit a couple of times and jammed it in which threw off the position sensor. Again, you'd have to pull it back out and be careful not to strip any gears - they're nylon I think! Hope this helps...

Yes it is the telescoping part. It goes about half of what it should. I pulled on it a little but no help. Could be a sensor problem because motor is shutting off; no binding noises heard.

Yeah, the motors have encoders on them (kinda' like a digital variable resistor) - if somebody shoved the thing in while it was out, that would have knocked the encoder out of whack, so now, the mirror effectively doesn't really know where it is! If you can't force it out, then it's "Off to the Dealer you Go, young Man"!!! Sorry to say it...

Ok, was hoping to avoid that. As far as I know it’s never been pushed in manually. Hopefully warranty will cover.

My mirror stopped extending unless you helped it by hand and now and then it would work fine. My ford mechanic friend said there isn't anything to fix it other than to replace it.

Can you give me any advice of how to spray/where to spray to fix this?

I just tried to visualize where the center of the rotation would be on each of the arms, then sprayed above and below each arm as deep as I could with a long tube (like the ones that come on a can of WD40), folded the Mirror in and out several times and you could actually hear it getting better! Of course, the next time I got home from driving it, that door was covered with streaks of silicon... had to get some cleaner and wipe the door down!

So I took mine in to dealer, and they found that it was just dirty. Ok. At time of pickup it stuck the first time I tried it, but then worked fine when SM tried it. After a few weeks it will either not extend, partially extend, or work as expected. And mostly not work when I need it to. Seems crazy though that the motor would work that sporadically.

Did they replace it or just spray something in there?
There is another post on this from last year maybe ? do a search as they had a semi fix for it

They said they took it apart and cleaned it. I would like find a diagram of its internals to better understand if spraying lube in there actually does anything.

I guess I am more worried about HOW it got dirty enough to make it stop working right. You would think that it would be tight enough to keep out dirt??

If your spraying lube I would use a dry lube. WD40 residue will attract more dirt where spray dry lube won't
