Receiver Rust

Has anyone else experienced rusting from the inside of the square tubing and it spreading out? If so had it fixed or fixed it yourself?

Mine is a ‘19 with hardly any winter salt miles and no other rust underneath. I tend to be pretty cautious of rust and spray the truck off after any trips when salt is out. Every time I see another Superduty I look to see if they have this and I have yet to see it on trucks with more winters and miles on them. I can understand where the hitch goes in or safety chain hooks attach rusting but not where this is.

My local dealer has been good about helping me with warranty stuff (rubbing board peeling & broken mirror) but says this wouldn’t be covered. I’m only at 16,000 miles total and hate to deal with it still under warranty.
My plan is to take it off clean it up and repaint it and put some rust prevention spray inside, unless Ford will do a some thing.

I live in California and my receiver started rusting in the same spot after about two years. I think it's just a cheap paint job with no primer.

You’ll find that thing doesn’t just pop right off. You’ll need to remove the bumper, a torch to heat the bolts and a hefty impact wrench. It’s a 4 beer job for sure. Instead, I’d mask the bumper real good, hit it with a portable sand blaster, and then just rattle-can it.

Mine started showing rust there a little bit, I just hit it with Amsoil HDMP every so often and it seems to keep it in check. I do the same for the whole truck frame.

Just keep it coated with Fluid Film, as well as the chassis.

I hit any rust spots on my hitch each spring as well as my plow mount. Holds up perfect the rest of the year. Repeat the following spring. Same routine on the last 3 SD trucks.

That's the plan once I clean it up and paint it. I did the frame this spring and avoided this just because I wanted to see if they'd do anything about it or I was going to blast it and re paint.

The thing I don't like about fluid film in an exposed (in view) area is that it gets filthy and collects a ton of dirt. Under the truck, it doesn't bother me but something exposed like a receiver, it just looks bad. But that's just me.

Try Amsoil HDMP (Heavy Duty Metal Protector). I switched from Fluid Film to Amsoil because the Amsoil leaves almost a waxy finish that does not seem to collect and hold dirt like Fluid Film does. Otherwise, it comes in aerosol cans so application is easy. It can be used as a lubricant also (apparently you can use it for motorcycle chains).

Seems common to me. Every hitch I’ve had got rusty early on, even if I prepped with POR-15. Not sure if rock chip caused the moisture to get below the surface.

I worry more about the rust seizing the ball shank to the receiver, so I try to clean it out periodically.

Just noticed chrome bumpers are starting to get rust spots around the fog light cutout. Inevitable rust in the Midwest.
